One of the rarest and most interesting IWC watches of the last few decades is one that a lot of newer IWC clients and fans might not even have heard of: the long out-of-production reference 3705, ceramic cased “Fliegerchronograph” or Pilot’s Chronograph.

What Was The IWC Reference 3705? The IWC Reference 3705 was IWC’s first Pilot’s Watch in black zirconium oxide ceramic. That novel and early use of black ceramic, and the fact that it has gone under without anyone really recognizing it for what it was, renders it quite a fascinating watch.
We’ve seen it with their Tribute to MK XI, and this year we get the Tribute to one of the great ‘90s sport watches, the IWC reference 3705. This is the ‘Tribute to 3705’ IW387905, and we tried it out next to my own ref 3706, the steel cased sibling to the 3705.Conceived during Blümlein’s tenure of IWC, the Ref. 3705 belongs to one of the most progressive families of chronographs. It’s modern, but rare. It’s a pilot’s watch, but the design is far from being minimalistic, as it also features a chronograph, and day and date display.
The newly released Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tribute to 3705” (Ref. 387905) pays homage to this exceptional timepiece and is limited to 1000 pieces. The dial is a replica of the original from the 1990s. Two totalizers at 9 and 12 o’clock display stop times of up to 12 hours, the small second is located at 6 o’clock.
The official designation of the new watch is the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tribute to 3705,” and it bears the IWC reference number 387905. A side by side comparison of the new watch to the old reveals that IWC has made only small changes.
